Learning Centres play an important role in Kindergarten classrooms. Centre time gives children the opportunity to grow in their social interactions with their peers, develop communication skills and build on their relationships. Centre time also gives children the opportunity to experiment with a variety of learning materials in a way that is interactive and engaging.
Ask your child what their favorite centre is at school and some of the things they have learnt while playing at centres.
Below are some of the numeracy and literacy centres that they have been doing.
We have been busy building our classroom hero ‘Mat Man’.
Using Mat Man in the classroom has many educational benefits such as developing body awareness, teaching children how to draw our bodies and helps with preprinting shapes that are essential when learning how to form letters.
As a class, we practiced building Mat Man one body part at a time sitting in a circle. We listened to the Mat Man song so they knew when it was their turn to assemble their body part. They also got a chance during centres to practice building Mat Man in small groups.
Below are some before and after pictures of their self-portraits. The before pictures were drawn on September 16th before we had introduced Mat Man into our classroom. The after pictures were drawn after learning about the different body parts that need to be included when drawing a person. They were also given a checklist to help ensure they included all the body parts in their drawing.
